  • Aromatherapy and Pregnancy

Some woman may have some concerns about using essential oils whilst pregnant and they are right to, although essential oils are all natural, that doesn’t mean they are all safe!

I am trained in which ones are safe to use and at which point of the pregnancy- some essential oils are an emmenagogue, which means they can encourage or stimulate menstruation, when pregnant this is not what we want.

However, if you are at your due date or after your due date these oils are very beneficial and can be a natural way to move these along.

I want to share the list of unsafe essential oils so you (or someone you know) can be safe and avoid these during pregnancy:

    Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

Rose (Rosa damascena or Rosa centifolia)

    Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

    Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

    Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

    Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum or officinale)

    Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum)

    Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

    Anise (Pimpinella anisum)

    Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)

    Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

    Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

    Marjoram (Origanum majorana)

    Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

    Sage (Salvia officinalis)

    Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis)

    Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)

    Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)

    Parsley Seed (Petroselinum sativum)

    Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus)

    Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) – mild stimulant effect

    Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica)

    Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum)

Other oils to be aware of: Some essential oils, such as thuja, pennyroyal, and tansy, are considered emmenagogic and should be avoided during pregnancy.

Important Note: Always consult with a healthcare professional or qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any underlying health conditions
